Are you majoring in music but having trouble with aural skills (“ear training”)? If so, then this app is for you! It contains over 680 original rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic dictations which cover 5 different difficulty levels. There’s something for music majors of every skill level!
Choose your level (Beginner through Level 4) and category (Rhythm, Melody, or Harmony), then pick from dozens of dictations (each one has its own detailed description). Once chosen, you’ll see a template which gives you all the information you need to get started (key signature, starting notes or chords, etc.). Once you’ve copied the template onto your staff paper, click the button to listen to the audio stream as many times as you’d like (each audio file can be downloaded as well). Once you’re confident with what you’ve written, close the audio window and scroll down past the template to the see the correct answer.
The app keeps track of which ones you’ve completed, so feel free to jump around and try out different levels and categories, or go for broke and see if you can complete all 688!
The beginner level roughly corresponds to a remedial aural skills course and is appropriate for music majors with only a little experience reading music. Levels 1 – 4 correspond with a typical four semester aural skills sequence used by many collegiate music programs in the United States.
